Field Studies 101 - Educator Workshops in Bayou Parkland
Bayou Parkland is an 80-acre section of Hermann Park bordered by Brays Bayou, Almeda Road, and South MacGregor Boulevard. Through funding from the Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Fund and other private donors, Bayou Parkland now has woodlands, nature trails, educational ponds, a wildflower meadow, and a picnic grove.

Field Studies 101 brings students in grades K-12 on teacher-led field trips to explore the urban forest, ponds, and meadow of Bayou Parkland. Classroom and field activities for Field Studies 101 have been tested with thousands of students. Participating educators attend a workshop to learn about Field Studies 101.

A typical field trip lasts two to three hours. At the site, trainers will distribute field study equipment and answer questions about the activities. Teachers then lead their students on a wide variety of activities ranging from catching small fish and insects to testing pond water for pH and dissolved oxygen levels. Before or after their field trip, students are welcome to eat lunch in the picnic grove or by reservation at the Bayou Parkland Pavillion.
